HAPPINESS. Director Hur Jin-ho has been known for his distinctive melodramas ever since his acclaimed debut Christmas in August. However after the box office disappointments of One Fine Spring Day and April Snow (which did extremely well in Japan, but not in Korea), he is hoping to reach a somewhat wider audience with his fourth film Happiness. The film tells the story of a cirrhosis patient who goes to a rural sanitorium and falls in love with a fellow patient named Eun-hee. Taking the leading roles will be well-known actors Hwang Jeong-min (You Are My Sunshine, Bloody Tie) and Lim Soo-jung (I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK, A Tale of Two Sisters). Produced by Zip Cinema, it will be released by Showbox in early fall.

Hwang-Im's 'Happiness' Invited to Toronto Film Festival

The Korean film "Happiness" starring Hwang Jeong-min and Im Soo-jeong has officially been invited to the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival.

The Toronto festival, called the 'Cannes' of North America, is the largest regional film market and one of the four major global film festivals after the Cannes, Berlin and Venice.

An official of the movie said, "An invitation to the festival's Contemporary World Cinema category came simply through a preview of the film's edited version, as full editing and mixing has yet to be done. It's double the pleasure to have been invited along with the Cannes winning Korean film 'Secret Sunshine'."

The Contemporary World Cinema category, regarded a key section at Toronto, invites award winning films and new productions by up-and-coming directors.

'Happiness,' directed by Heo Jin-ho, depicts the ultimately cruel love story of a couple who first meet at a nursing home.

chosun.com (2007.09.13 14:59)

Lim Soo-jung Grows Up in New Tearjerker

Some thought she was going to be girl forever, but suddenly Lim Soo-jung has become a woman. Now she plays a victim of chronic lung disease over eight years in Director Heo Jin-ho’s latest film Happiness, to be released on Oct. 3. In the movie, Im's character Eun-hi falls in love with Yeong-su who comes to the rehab center for his own illness, but after she has given him everything, he throws her away. The Chosun Ilbo spoke to the actress.

People say you have a baby face and looking young is good, but it can also restrict the range of characters you play as an actress.

In the movie, Yeong-su and Eun-hi are seven to eight years apart. I was able to become completely absorbed in my character, and when I did that, these concerns just disappeared. I'm sure when audiences see the movie, they won't find it awkward at all.

Eun-hi is so feminine, one wonders whether such woman can actually exist in real life.

To be honest, I'm more like Su-yeon, the character played by Gong Hyo-jin, who is more contemporary and cool. Thats why when I first got the script, I couldnt fully understand my character. Eun-hi is on the extreme end of the spectrum with maximum femininity. She is almost a motherly character. But then when you think about it, all women have maternal love inside them.

While Eun-hi is feminine, she is not completely old-fashioned as she is very bold and doesnt shy away from expressing her affection.

Right. Eun-hi doesn’t pretend at all. She doesnt calculate. As long as she likes the person, she doesnt mind saying lets move in together.Shes honest because for her, being happy is what matters the most since she doesnt know how long she has left to live. In that sense, Im a bit like Eun-hi. Im not so bold, but Im honest with my feelings, and if there is a person I like, I express it.

Have you ever been in love?

Of course I have. I was in love in my early 20s. In the movie, it was literally heartbreaking to see Yeong-su change. I couldnt help but cry to see the frustrated Yeong-su who is getting tired of Eun-hi in the playground scene. In the script, Eun-hi is supposed to just look at Yeong-su, but I cried. The director later said he would have regretted if I hadnt cried (laughs).

What are you like in real life?

Before I made my break (in a sitcom called School I in 2001), I was a nobody for about three years, and during that time I probably have tried out at hundreds of different auditions. In the process, I changed a lot. I was really shy before, but now Im a bit like the bouncy Si-eun in Lump Of Sugar, a bit odd like Yeong-gun in Im a Cyborg, but Thats OK, and part of me is really closed-up and fragile like the sisters in A Tale Of Two Sisters. I feel like I take with me a bit of each character I've played and I dont want to throw away even one. Am I going to go develop a multiple personality disorder at this rate? (laughs).

Tell us your ultimate goal as an actress.

So far I've been mostly playing unrealistic characters. They were either physically or mentally sick. So in the future I hope I get to play characters that are more down-to-earth. Im also drawn to strong women characters. Maybe a businesswoman or a martial artist in a historical film? An evil character would be interesting too. If I can have one wish before I turn 40, that is to perform so well that everyone gives me two thumbs up.

[MOVIE REVIEW] 'Happiness' a moving tale of addiction, affection

Once people get stuck with the same fate, a bond can grow between them instantly; however, the relationship can fall apart fairly quickly if the common ground vanishes. Director Hur Jin-ho's "Happiness" portrays a heart-wrenching drama in which bonding and parting take place over some period of time, accentuating the emotional depth of a relationship that is torn apart due to the ruinous fusion of addiction and affection.
In the film to be released on Oct. 3, Young-su (Hwang Jung-min) symbolizes the precariousness of life in the fast lane. A serious alcoholic, he drinks, drinks, drinks to the point of going blank at the trendy nightclub he runs. But his super-fast life skids to a thumping halt when he is diagnosed with a debilitating disease, cirrhosis of the liver. Jilted by his girlfriend, an equally addicted individual -- in this case, to meaningless consumption and a wasteful lifestyle -- Young-su hands over his nightclub ownership to his close friend, and reluctantly heads for a sanitarium in the remote countryside, where there will be no more booze, no more gals.

In the sanitarium, Young-su encounters a calm, soft-spoken girl with a pale face. Eun-hee (Lim Soo-jung), who has stayed at the facility for the past eight years, is struggling with a rare and serious lung disease, yet she remains upbeat and gentle. And she walks slowly and moves her body cautiously as if a single misstep might break her life into pieces. Yet, in a cheerful way, she tells Young-su that she has already lost about 40 percent of her lung, and a doctor says she might die if she ventures out to run fast. Young-su and Eun-hee stand at the opposite end of the lifestyle spectrum. He is yet to shed his old habits of the city -- drinking, smoking and clubbing -- and she leads her quiet, disciplined life in this rural setting. When they fall for each other in an unlikely spot nestled deep inside a mountainous area, they seem to forget where they come from. And they develop a bond that is immediately addictive, something that Eun-hee has experienced before. After a passionate kiss with him, Eun-hee shares her feelings about endless, almost addictive desire: "When I was kissing you, though it may sound strange, I wanted to kiss you more, and even more."

Thanks to her dedicated efforts and great caring, Young-su's health steadily recovers. It's a 'happy' development for Eun-hee, because his improved health means their nature-friendly, vegetarian and substance-free lifestyle has paid off nicely. But the same development does not come as a happy one for Young-su, who suddenly feels that his lifestyle has changed too much. He misses the old days when he indulged in alcohol, cigarettes, junk food and easy sex.

Director Hur carefully achieves a cinematographic distance when he depicts Young-su's struggle with addictive habits. It's true that it takes a tremendous amount of energy, patience and willpower to quit drinking and stay sober. At the same time, it's also resoundingly true that old habits die hard. In a telling scene, Young-su finishes the day's farm labor and gets paid; then the farmer who has hired him gently pushes a cup of beer to Young-su. At this critical moment of temptation, Young-su hesitates for a moment, about 10 seconds, puts his hand on the beer and gulps it down quickly. With a knowing smile, the farmer delivers an illuminating line: "No drinking and no smoking is surely good for your health, but without them, there's no fun in life."

Happiness, after all, depends on one's perspective. For Young-su, happiness means hitting the fast track and indulging his pent-up desire at a night club amid heart-thumping rock music, even though his health and long-term welfare may go down the drain. For Eun-hee, happiness implies decency, self-sufficiency, frugality, modesty and caring for others, especially her loved one Young-su, even though she is staging an uphill battle to extend her life.

Their views on happiness are poles apart -- so much so that when the falling-for period switches jarringly into a falling-out, she goes out and runs. She doesn't care even if she may die running like that. Death is not her primary concern.

In "Happiness," award-winning actor Hwang Jung-min shows off his versatility to the point of sheer shock and repugnance. Toward the end of the film, Hwang's Young-su character is so realistically portrayed as a callous and ungrateful man that audiences might not have any sympathy left when he turns a critical corner in his tumultuous life.

Lim Soo-jung also tops expectations by playing a difficult character with a rare finesse that adds a counterbalancing comfort to the touching interplay between addiction and affection.

Director Hur's efforts to keep sentimentality to a minimum also deserve credit for making the film a thought-provoking tale that transcends the confines of a typical melodrama. For a gentle reminder of where he stands on the matter of the impenetrable human mind, he also clearly depicts the symbolic name of the sanitarium, "House of Hope."

'Happiness' Measures Cost of Love

By Lee Hyo-won
Staff Reporter

Love is pain, they say, and countless songs and stories croon about it time over time. Melodrama maestro Hur Jin-ho (``One Fine Spring Day,'' 2001, ``April Snow,'' 2005) does not disappoint in depicting love's fleeting pleasures and lasting sting with poignant tenderness in his fourth romance ``Happiness.''

Things can't get any worse for Yeong-jae (Hwang Jung-min), a heavy drinking, chain-smoking playboy: His nightclub goes bankrupt, his girlfriend deserts him and he might die from cirrhosis (point of interest: the club scene was shot in Apgujeong NB, which also closed its doors not too long ago).

He packs up everything and retreats to a rehabilitation center in the middle of nowhere, where he meets the most unexpected: true love. Eun-hi (Lim Soo-jung) suffers from fatally weak lungs, but despite her frail appearance she is stouthearted and takes care of the other patients. Yeong-jae and Eun-hi fall madly in love and move into a small house in the countryside. Each moment is filled with peace and Yeong-jae discovers a sweetness and profundity to life he never knew before.

Yet, ``for each ecstatic instant we must an anguish pay in keen and quivering ration to the ecstasy,'' as Emily Dickinson wrote: As Yeong-jae regains his strength, he grows bored with country life and feels suffocated by Eun-hi's devotion. Tempted by his friends and ex-girlfriend to return to the city, he leaves the woman that saved his life.

``Before, I couldn't live without you, but now, you're driving me crazy,'' he tells her bitterly.

Actor Hwang Jung-min completely casts off his much-loved image as a passionately devoted husband in ``You are My Sunshine'' (2005) as he trades in his boorish farmer clothes and potbelly for a dangerously sexy, chic urban look complete with a six-pack.

Although the film publicizes Hwang's deterioration into a bad guy, his character, though contemptible at times, is far from being completely loathsome like Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Woody Allen's ``Match Point'' (2005) or Cho Jae-hyun in Kim Ki-deok's ``Bad Guy'' (2001).

``Happiness'' is essentially a love story, but, at large, a realistic sketch of the human condition and a testimony of modern man's dilemma. Weak-willed and lacking self-restraint, Yeong-jae is simply ordinary -- an antihero with completely normal, human flaws. You actually feel sympathetic for the guy who falls prey to the dark seductions of our oversexed, consumption-driven society.

The film is almost biblical in the sense that Eun-hi creates the prefect Garden of Eden for Yeong-jae, who is doomed to escape only to meet his downfall.

Even Su-yeon (Kong Hyo-jin), who leaves her dying boyfriend but later wants him back when he is recovered and with another woman, speaks to the no-strings-attached romance of our generation.

Lim Soo-jung personifies her character with such tenderness that you can never imagine anyone else playing the part. Compared with her previous role as a dying schoolgirl in ``…ing'' (2003), the baby-faced actress makes a big step toward full-fledged ``womanhood,'' and the snippet of the film's love scene in its preview created quite a stir here.

Eun-hi is made of beauty in all its possible forms, with the tenderness of a guardian angel, devotion of a mother and the fervor of a passionate lover. Her almost too perfect character could have stopped short of being allegorical at best, but she becomes instantly terrestrial thanks to minute details that make all the difference. Any woman would be able relate to discreetly checking out one's face in front of the man she pretends not to fancy.

``Happiness'' is a memorable film that strikes both sense and sensibility -- leaving you to ruminate the nature of love while leaving a resonating vibe in your heart.

Coming to theaters Oct.3.

Actresses Gain Presence Onscreen

Actresses Kim Tae-ran, left, and Lee Mi-youn star in “Lovers Behind.”

By Lee Hyo-won
Staff Reporter

While the female persona Korean entertainment remains largely reminiscent of Hollywood during the 1950~60s, a few in recently released or upcoming films are beginning to reflect, with some realism, Korean women today.

Women onscreen tend to be either innocent asexual Audrey Hepburns (think Lee Young-ae, Choi Ji-woo, Song Hye-kyo) or smoldering Marylin Monroes oozing with sex appeal (Kim Hye-soo, Uhm Jung-hwa). Then there exists a third, very minor group of eccentrics like Katherine Hepburn that fit into neither category, like actresses Kang Hae-jeong, Bae Doo-na and Kong Hyo-jin.

In other words, it is rather difficult to meet truly realistic female characters in movies. A most disappointing example is director Kwak Kyoung-taek's latest offering ``A Love.'' In this terribly old-fashioned story about a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, the heroine is but a mere caricature embodying romantic fantasies: the unforgettable first love, frail damsel in distress and untainted prostitute. She is but a superficial plot element that gives the male protagonist a story to tell.

Roles for sexual or even remotely sexually active women continue to be reserved for the more ``mature'' actresses. They tend to be over 30 and/or married. Sex icon Kim Hye-soo, for example, plays a string of femme fatale roles from ``Hypnotized'' (2004) to ``Tazza: The High Rollers'' (2005) and ``A Day for an Affair'' (2006).

Upcoming sex comedy ``Lovers Behind'' features two very different but equally sexy women. The film delightfully resembles ``Sex and the City,'' with two women speaking frankly about love and sex. Lee Mi-youn, the Nicole Kidman of Korea enjoying a newfound peak in her career following her divorce from actor Kim Seung-woo, plays the role of a photographer who wants romances with no strings attached. Lee Tae-ran, who enjoys steady popularity in her acting career, depicts a woman who marries one man after another to enjoy a lavish lifestyle. While these female characters provide much humor, they are over-sexualized in a sense that their sexuality is the only thing that defines them. The film will be released mid-October.

Another recent film, however, brings to screen a fresh new female persona. In Hur Jin-ho's ``Happiness,'' now playing in theaters, Lim Soo-jung's petite, slim and dewy-eyed character Eun-hi is at first glance another Audrey Hepburn. But Eun-hi is far from passive in her romantic relationship with Yeong-su (Hwang Jung-min), and does not hesitate to initiate sex _ without being a seductive temptress _ or propose to move in together.

``I wanted to show that when a woman is in love with a man, she too can be assertive,'' said director Hur during a press conference at a Seoul theater last month. For the baby-faced actress, this is a dramatic departure from her girlish roles as a high-school girl in ``…ing'' (200) or the fairytale-like character in ``I am a Cyborg but That's OK'' (200). She has finally grown up enough to play parts closer to her actual age.

Likewise, superstar Kim Tae-hee matures onscreen opposite award-winning actor Sul Kyoung-gu in ``Ssaum (Fight)'' coming to theaters December. The movie humorously portrays a couple who, once madly in love, are now fiercely battling each other. Kim casts off her sweet, angelic allure to personify an irritable woman who does not refrain from resorting to physical violence while arguing with her husband.

The fighting spirit in women does not stop with Kim Tae-hee. Audiences can look forward to Do Ji-won in her role in ``Punch Lady.'' Do plays a submissive housewife who one day decides not to put up with her abusive husband any longer. She begins training hard to master the art of fighting after publicly announcing a duel on the ring with her pro-wrestler husband.

Although this is a rather comical theatrical situation, it reflects how women in Korean cinema are beginning to show a bit of dimension and color. ``Punch Lady'' is due for release at the end of the month.

A girl needs heartbreak to be a woman

October 10, 2007

Actress Lim Su-jung, 27, has decided it’s time she started to act her age. By Kang Jung-hyun
Perhaps Lim Su-jung has bid farewell to her girl years. It’s a disappointment, but the 27-year-old actress has made her choice. Now in her late 20s, she is only doing what is natural.
“Happiness” is a film about a young woman who falls in love with a bad boy (Hwang Jung-min) she meets in a rural nursing home. It’s a coming-of-age ritual for Lim. In the movie one of her lines is, “I am older than I look.”
“After starring in a movie about love between adults, rather than between teenagers,” Lim said, “I feel like I’ve grown up, like I’ve married someone.”
With a baby face on a petite frame, Lim has always taken the roles of precocious girls who suffer early tragedies.
In the hit KBS drama “Sorry, I Love You,” she fell in love with an adoptee; in the film “Ing,” she was a terminally ill high school girl who accepted her imminent death with grace.
But Lim has never been an object of sexual desire for older men. Some of her characters even had the power to heal, such as the 30-kilogram (66-pound) anorexic girl in “I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK.”
Lim was such a perfect fit for the role that the award-winning director Park Chan-wook was amazed.
Happiness, which opened a week ago, is the latest film by Huh Jin-ho, who has previously worked with the hottest actresses of the day, such as Shim Eun-ha (“Christmas in August”) or Lee Young-ae (“One Fine Spring Day”).
Whereas Lee asks her man if he’d like to stay for a bowl of instant noodles, Lim’s character, suffering from a lung disease, wonders if the man would like to live with her. Of course, the love fades away, and the lovers suffer.
“It seems like I’ve just closed the first chapter of my acting career,” Lim said. Beneath her girl-next-door looks lay a strong seam of tenacity and perseverance.
Lim said the filming of Happiness began a week after she finished working on Cyborg. She admitted that she struggled to make the adjustment from the devil-may-care Young-goon character in Cyborg to become the Eun-hee character in Happiness, a much more complicated persona who makes sacrifices for her lover.
Also, she had to adjust to the contrasting styles of the directors: Park Chan-uk in Cyborg was a master at planning ahead, whereas Huh tended to improvise.
“I felt Eun-hee only had a small part in the movie,” Lim said. “But that only motivated me to tackle this role. It wasn’t easy, but once I relaxed, I had the character down.
“I was fairly content after finishing one film, and then the Eun-hee character emerged as another obstacle,” she continued. “That’s why acting is always so challenging. Every role brings out something in me that I didn’t know existed.”
Lim has mostly played young girls in TV dramas and films, and she said it is about time her roles reflected her real age.
“I wanted to be in Happiness because I could project my real sensibilities as a woman in her late 20s,” Lim said. “I couldn’t keep playing a teenage girl forever.”
However, she might have seemed like a girl to her co-star Hwang, who is 10 years her senior. Lim said she’d always wanted to work with Hwang, adding, “His mere presence was an inspiration. In the latter stage of the film, I had tears in my eyes, just looking at him.”
She likely needed all the inspiration she could get during the making of Happiness.
Director Huh left the ending scene wide open, just telling his stars to “sit down and look at each other.”
“He worked with the actors on the spot to add dialogue and other details,” Lim said of her director. “We would do 15, 20 takes for each cut. It was tiring, but as an actor, it was a great opportunity to think through each scene.”
After three films in a year (“Lump of Sugar,” about a girl’s love for horse riding, was the third), Lim said she wants to take a breather, hoping to take on “more outside-the-box” roles in the future.
“With my first chapter closed, I wonder what the next chapter will be like,” Lim said. “As far as acting is concerned, I’d like to be true to myself, and do things my way.
“I want to create a ‘Lim Su-jung’ style. Is that too much of a pipe dream?”

Actor Hwang Jung-min Returns to Stage

Actor Hwang Jung-min, who recently starred in the movie“ Happiness,”is returning to his beginnings--the musical stage.
By Chung Ah-young
Staff Reporter

Movie star and talented musical actor Hwang Jung-min will return to the stage next year, four years after his last musical, ``42nd Street.''

He is a household name on the big screen with successful performances in ``You Are My Sunshine,'' (2005) ``Psychopath,'' (2007) and ``Happiness'' (2007).

But the award-winning performer first began his acting career as a musical actor in ``Line 1'' (1995) and then starred in various musicals such as ``Jesus Christ Superstar'' and ``Cats.''

``I am very excited (to come back to the musical.) With `Nine' as my comeback piece, I will do my best,'' he said in a press release.

Based on an Italian play by Mario Fratti inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film ``8½,'' it focuses on the film director Guido Contini, which will be played by Hwang.

The musical deals with the famous director's approaching fortieth birthday, which thrusts him into an emotional tailspin that threatens to destroy his personal and professional life.

The role of Guido Contini is the only male cast member among 18 women.

With Hollywood star Antonio Banderas, as well as a number of other key players, performing in 2003's Broadway revival of ``Nine'', much of its reputation can attributed to Banderas, whose acting and singing talent along with his good looks made for an ideal Guido Contini.

Now the Korean production is placing much expectation on Hwang, who shines in films with his captivating acting.

Starring in various musicals and plays in Daehangno, Hwang's debut film was ``The Waikiki Brothers,'' in 2001. Then he appeared in prominent films like ``A Good Lawyer's Wife,'' ``You're My Sunshine,'' and ``Bloody Tie,'' in which he portrayed many diverse characters.

The Korean production will be directed by veteran director David Swan who worked in several Korean hit productions such as ``Man of La Mancha'' and ``All Shook Up.''

``Nine'' premiered in 1982 on Broadway and was nominated in 10 sections of Tony Awards and won five awards, including the best revival award.

The musical will be staged at LG Arts Center in southern Seoul on Jan. 22 and will run until March 2 next year.

Tickets cost from 30,000 won to 120,000 won. For more information, call 1588-5212.

Hwang Grows Into Mature Role in Musical

Actor Hwang Jung-min has become one of the most sought-after actors among Korean film directors since his successful performances in ``You Are My Sunshine,'' (2005) ``Black House,'' (2007) and ``Happiness'' (2007).

But many musical fans might remember his stage performances as much as his on-screen ones. So his return to the musical, ``Nine'' is causing many musical buffs to have high expectations.

His comeback work is based on an Italian play by Mario Fratti inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film ``8 1/2,'' focusing on the film director Guido Contini, which will be played by Hwang.

Hwang said that the musical has a special meaning for him as the piece is about an ``adult coming-of-age'' in which the film director in his 40s wrestles with burnout in creativity and looks back on his career and life.

The musical deals with the famous director approaching his 40th birthday, which thrusts him into an emotional tailspin that threatens to destroy his personal and professional life.

``I can sympathize with the role, which is about growing up as an artist. Through Guido, the musical gives me the opportunity to look back at my acting career and my life,'' Hwang told reporters in the press conference.

Hwang said that he finds something in common between his role and his life in which he sometimes worries about how much he can do in his next work and how at times he is not honest with his feelings when he takes on a new role.

``My fans who liked my earlier performance as a musical actor might have waited for my return for a long time, and also, my movie fans might want to see my musical performance on stage as well. So I feel responsibility in satisfying both audiences with my comeback piece,'' said Hwang.

Hwang returns to the stage four years after his last musical, ``42nd Street.'' The actor debuted in the musical, ``Line 1'' (1995) and then starred in various musicals such as ``Jesus Christ Superstar'' and ``Cats.''

Shin Chun-soo, producer and president of the OD Musical Company, said that it took three years to cast Hwang as the leading role because he has found the right actor to rival Banderas' performance.

``The musical doesn't have much of a reputation compared to other Broadway musicals. But it scored big success both in commercial and critical aspects. I think Hwang is an actor who can surpass Banderas' reputation,'' said Shin.

The Korean production will be directed by veteran director David Swan who worked in several Korean hit productions such as ``Man of La Mancha'' and ``All Shook Up.''

Swan said that the musical focuses on the artistic life of Guido, who started exploring his career and discovers emptiness.

``The musical mixes reality and fantasy memory. But it is both entertaining and moving,'' said Swan.

``Nine'' premiered in 1982 on Broadway and was nominated in 10 categories of Tony Awards and won five of them, including the best revival award.

In the Korean production of the musical, award-winning actress Kim Sun-young will play the part of Luisa, Guido's wife. Kang Pil-suk will alternate playing the role of Guido with Hwang.

The musical will be staged at LG Arts Center in southern Seoul Jan. 22 and will run through March 2.

Tickets cost from 30,000 won to 120,000 won. For more information, call 1588-5212.

A Japan-Korea coproduction, "Black House" is based on Japanese writer Yûsuke Kishi's award-winning early novel, having been filmed once in 1999 by Morita Yoshimitsu ("Family Game"), also scheduled to debut this summer on Region 1 DVD. Unfortunately, it emulates the strategy of Hollywood remakes of the J-horror, by boosting up volume and scare tactics but largely abandons the kind of phlegmatic, deliberately paced terror expected in the high-end Japanese genre literature or film, not to mention the original's superb characterizations.

Lee Yeong-joong's screenplay invents a rather hackneyed childhood trauma for Jun-O, while reducing one of the novel's most fascinating and complex characters, the company "enforcer" Miyoshi, into a crude thug with a fondness for dental floss.

Helmer Shin Terra (Sin Tae-ra) is clearly an inventive filmmaker but has some way to go before mastering storytelling skills. Those who have not read the novel might be befuddled by the sequences that are in turn confusingly presented, inadequately explained or simply illogical. (Did Choong-Bae bite off his thumb or not? And all children who have dreams of flying off into the air in a swing are supposed to grow up to be psychos? Maybe that explains Ann Coulter.)

Despite these weaknesses, however, "Black House" works. Like, say, "Blood Rain", the movie's power is greatly enhanced by its colorful production design (supervised by Jo Hwa-Seong) and competent cinematography/lighting (Choe Joo-Young and Lee Sung-Jae). The psychopath's lair, with its makeshift abattoir-operating room ambience, smeared with blood and filth, is impressively frightening.

Hwang Jeong-min, one of the most reliable character actors working in Korea today, makes for a thoroughly believable and sympathetic hero. Yoo Seon, fragile-looking but strangely alluring, provides an interesting contrast to the Morita version's slightly whacky but memorable performance by Otake Shinobu, and admirably holds her own against Hwang.

It is a tribute to their chemistry and Hwang's superior acting ability that you completely believe that Jun-O could be so frightened of Yi-Hwa, when, if you stop to think for a moment after the movie, their confrontation should look in real life like a grizzly bear cowering in terror before a hissing mountain cat.

In one important aspect, the film happily does not follow a Hollywood cliche. It culminates in a series of rather preposterous but extremely suspenseful Grand Guignol confrontations, but the monster remains the monster to the bitter end. Neither sexual abuse during childhood, nor Freudian psychoanalysis nor the "unrequited desire to be loved" is dredged up to explain away why it became the way it did.

By honoring Kishi's open-ended conclusion and putting the utterly conscienceless (but not unattractive) monster at the center of the movie, "Black House" ultimately recovers much of the goodwill initially lost by the rather slapdash way the novel was adapted.

DVD Presentation:

Genius Entertainment. NTSC. Dual Layer. Region 1. Video: Anamorphic Widescreen, 2.35:1. Audio: Korean Dolby Digital 5.0. Subtitles: English. Supplement: Making-of featurette, production design featurette, deleted scenes. Retail Price: $24.95. Release Date: April 22, 2008.

"Black House", a potentially appropriate title for the Tartan Extreme Asia label, is again directly released by Genius Entertainment. The transfer is good, if not outstanding. It retains a bit of the high-contrast, heavily filtered, edge-enhancement-spotted look familiar from Korean DVDs. Color scheme faithfully approximates the theatrical experience, not slipping too much into sickly yellow or brownish muck, and sporting nicely balanced cold blue and gray in key scenes.

Korean Dolby Digital 5.0 track is adequate to good, with some serious bang-up sound effects during the last 20 minutes.

English subs are high quality, providing translations of key texts as well as dialogues.

Cover design, however, is pretty hideous, and fails to sell the film's strength: it looks like one for an indifferently put-together haunted-house flick, which "Black House" most definitely is not. They should have used CJ Entertainment's composite poster that shows Hwang Jeong-min crouching in terror against an unseen assailant.

If US distributors are refusing to put Korean actor's faces in the posters because they are "unknowns" in the US, their logic is a total bunk. Do any of these people make the same argument for American posters for French films? (Quick, name the French actress seen through a keyhole in the poster for "With a Friend Like Harry"!)

The supplements are fairly generous, carried over from Region 3 DVD, with OK English subtitles. The making-of documentary is rather subdued, with director Shin, Hwang and Yu taking turns and discussing such topics as the difference between the novel and the screenplay. It clocks at around 20 minutes.

A shorter piece (seven minutes) on production design is more interesting, interspersed with full-blown architectural designs of the Black House itself and other onscreen sets. Designer Jo reveals, among interesting tidbits, that the design concept for the psychopath's lair was a public bathhouse from '70s, fallen into disuse for 30 years.

Deleted scenes are mostly character-expanding scenes for Jun-O working as an insurance agent. It does include a cameo appearance by the author Kishi as a Japanese customer.

"Black House" is a robust, muscular horror film, rather effective as a gut-wrenching, red-meat example of its type. While not entirely satisfactory as an adaptation of Kishi Yusuke's novel, it is nonetheless recommended to the horror and thriller fans.
