His new film stars Kim Kang-woo (The Aggressives, The Beast and the Beauty), Im Won-hee (Three... Extremes, Crying Fist), TV actress Lee Ha-na and Kim Sang-ho (Lump of Sugar, Mutt Boy) and looks at rivalry among chefs. Anticipation is rising for this film because it is based on a popular comic by Heo Young-man, who is now a hot property after another one of his works was adapted into the hit film Tazza: The High Rollers. 'Le Grand Chef' depicts story of talented cook



Huh Young-man, one of the most celebrated comic strip artists in Korea, began to serialize "Le Grand Chef" (Sikgaek) in a major daily in September 2002. A dramatic portrayal of a young, aspiring Korean cook, coupled with delicate sketches of various foods, appealed strongly to readers.
The series was published into several books, and some 540,000 copies have been sold so far. Huh's now famous graphic novel is also available on the internet, attracting 400,000 hits a day. Moviemakers never miss such an interesting work, and "Le Grand Chef" is now being produced as a feature film.

Its production staff and actors are upbeat because comic artist Huh's another series "War of Flowers" (Tazza), was recently adapted into a tantalizing gambling box-office hit that sold more than 6 million tickets.

"The success of 'War of Flowers' is good news for us, but I also feel some pressure," said director Jun Yoon-soo who took the helm of the "Le Grand Chef" project at a news conference in Yongin, south of Seoul, on Wednesday.

Prior to the news briefing, director Jun was filming a scene where Seong-chan (Kim Kang-woo) and Bong-ju (Lim Won-hee) were confronting each other at a cooking contest. Since the film was primarily concerned about cooking and the two characters were competing in a contest, real cooks were busy making various 'real' foods for the scene in the corner.

"Le Grand Chef" revolves around the conflict between Seong-chan and Bong-ju - longtime rivals intent on staying ahead in the competition. Five years before, the two were working together at Yunamjeong, a famous Korean restaurant.

To succeed the restaurant's owner, the two fought each other at a lethal inhouse contest. For some unknown reason, those who tasted Seong-chan's swellfish got poisoned, and Bong-ju grabbed the much-coveted 'best cook' spot at the restaurant.

The scene shot on Wednesday is set in the present: Seong-chan and Bong-ju meets again at a national cooking contest, a crucial opportunity for the warm-hearted and talented Seong-chan to prove his talent against the cold-hearted and vicious Bong-ju.

And the drama is heightened due to Jin-su (Lee Ha-na), a beautiful television producer who is covering the contest to uncover a mystery hidden behind the colorful event.

Kim Kang-woo, who plays the main character, said the main cast have been practicing cooking to act more realistically. "I have attended a cooking class for one and a half months and I have learned new tricks. But I cannot do my part without the help of cooking experts because the film covers a wide range of high-quality dishes all the time."

Lim Won-hee said his role - Bong-ju - is also based on solid cooking skills, so it's tough even with help from experts. "I receive instructions and tips from those who have been cooking for 10 years to 20 years. But even after I practiced a certain sequence, many times, I made mistakes in the actual shooting. It's really tough," he said.

Lee Ha-na, who made a silver screen debut through "Le Grand Chef," remained cheerful - her trademark characteristic demonstrated in a popular television drama which was well received in the first half of this year.

"I just love working with other cast members for this movie because I can travel to new places. Unlike a television drama, I visit different places in the course of filmmaking, and sometimes I think I'm just having fun," Lee said.

Since Lee takes the role of a television producer, she has learned how to handle cameras in order not to look amateurish. "I learned the basic camera skills from video journalists at SBS station for this film," she said.

Director Jun said the movie version has incorporated some new subplots to amplify the dramatic element of the original comic series. "There are many new scenes which are not in the comic series, and we believe such scenes will meet the expectations of the audience," he said.

2. Korea's first film on cooking, <Le Grand Chef>

<Le Grand Chef> is the first Korean film that deals deeply on the subject of cooking, another reason why the audience can look forward to it. Common food like egg rolls and bean-paste stew and palace food like steak and beef sushi can be seen along with over 70 true Korean great gourmet dishes. The film presents a new turf on cooking with all the lavish and beautiful food never seen before on the big screen. The movie is planned to be made in 55 scenes with cut 67 of scene 32 capturing top brilliant real cooking and promising to bring awe to the viewers. As the film is mainly about determining the best chef there is, the cooking competition rounds are also expected to be nothing less but grand.

In the competition for the top beef dish, the process of making the best charcoal will be revealed. And in the slaughtering round, the result of KIM Gang-woo and LIM Won-hee's skilled training in butchering will also be shown through the big screen.

3. The key to <Le Grand Chef> is the Chief Royal Chef!

The movie begins with the discovery of the long lost knife of the former Chief Royal Chef. Thereafter, a competition is held to find the best chef in the country who is worthy to inherit the legendary chef's knife. This is the main story of the movie. But the unfamiliar title has many people wondering; what is the "Chief Royal Chef?"

The Chief Royal Chef lived in the Cho-sun period. He lived outside of the palace and ran the top restaurant of the country, Woon-ahm-jung. The title belonged to the top male chef of the palace who would go in to cook the food for banquets and feasts. <Le Grand Chef> added the tradition that the best chef of the country shall remain a prodigy of the Chief Royal Chef, inherit the Woon-am-jung, and have the legendary knife as well.

The Chief Royal Chef appears just briefly in the original comic but is the main base for the plot in the movie as the top chefs Sung-chan and Bong-joo are matched up in their ultimate competition to carry on the tradition. Through the idea that the Chief Royal Chef had cut off his wrist himself to state that he will not cook for anyone else but the king during the Japanese occupation era and the mystery behind his death eventually being solved, the film is sure to bring enjoyment with a plot that crosses back and forth between truth and fiction.

The heightened interest in Korean food--thanks to the hit historical drama Jewel in the Palace (Daejanggeum)--is raising the popularity of the Korean film 'Freeloader (Sikgaek).'

Premiered at the Busan International Film Festival last week, the film grabbed the attention of major buyers from China, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.

Based on the same-titled hit comic by famed cartoonist Heo Young-man, it is the story of two Joseon era chefs vying for the coveted title of the dynasty's last court chef.

An array of colorful court dishes appearing in the film has been compared to those in Daejanggeum, backing its prospective popularity to Asian viewers. With good reviews at the Pusan festival's Asian Film Market, export deals are expected to come soon.

The film opens in Korea on November 1.

本月17号下午4点电影食客在首尔龙山的CGV电影院内举行了媒体首映礼。

在当天的首映礼结束后举行的记者座谈会上主演金姜宇表达了对这部影片的票房的信心。希望这部影片能成为我的代表作。拥有健康青年形象的金姜宇曾在台风太阳、美女与野兽和实尾岛中磨练了演技。在食客中担纲主演的金姜宇表达了对票房的期待。真希望食客能成为我的代表作。仔细想想我出演的电影好像并不多。大概是票房成绩不好的原因吧(笑),大家好像都不知道我演过什么角色。希望能通过食客来减轻我方面的压力。金姜宇表示漫画原著的作者许英满先生的评价比什么都重要。金姜宇说:昨天剧组成员用餐之后许英满老师说不论票房成功与否,这部电影本身已经取得了成功。他的话让我感到很开心。

接着,参与了影片中歌曲演唱的李荷娜发表了自己的感受。希望我的歌能成为小小的礼物。通过电影食客在影坛出道的李荷娜这次饰演的是充满魅力的VJ珍秀。参与了电影中音乐录制的李荷娜说:希望大家把我的演唱看作是小小的礼物。19岁时的我是个把音乐视为全部的平凡学生。那个时候我磨练了唱功,也许是这个原因,在每一部作品中我都会唱歌。如果说到心愿的话,希望大家能把我的歌当作是小小的礼物。从梦想成为歌手的音乐学生转行为演员的李荷娜呈现多才多艺的魅力。

[MOVIE REVIEW] `Le Grand Chef` offers visual feast with colorful food contest

"Le Grand Chef," directed by Jun Yoon-soo, is based on an extremely popular comic series of the same title. This adaptation is perhaps as razor-sharp as a knife wielded by the seasoned cooks featured in the film.
The apparent advantage of making this film was the original comics` popularity, which should surely stimulate the visual appetite of readers who have avidly consumed the serialized feast of Korean food.

Its disadvantage is that director Jun is under pressure to surpass -- or at least meet -- the higher expectations of those who have already tasted the colorful descriptions of savory food in Huh Young-man`s celebrated comic series.

Unlike the comics, where a sprawling number of episodes are presented buffet style, "Le Grand Chef" focuses on the confrontation between two central characters, Seong-chan (Kim Kang-woo) and Bong-ju (Lim Won-hee). The showdown is held at a national cooking contest, and much of the film`s visual appeal is drawn from the delicate presentation of food and the sparkling display of cooking skills by the contestants.

But there is a crucial background story. Five years ago, Seong-chan and his longtime rival Bong-ju were working together at a famous Korean restaurant called Unamjeong. The two fought a lethal cooking battle -- literally. For some unknown reason, those who ate Seong-chan`s swellfish were poisoned, and Bong-ju won the competition. Deeply depressed, Seong-chan left the restaurant and gave up cooking.

Now, back to the present where the two men run into each other again. After some wrangling and inner conflict, Seong-chan is finally persuaded to participate in a ferocious competition of cooks at a national championship, thanks in large part to a pretty video journalist called Jin-su (Lee Ha-na), who is covering the food contest and in the process helps uncover a less-than-savory mystery hidden behind the event.

At a recent press preview, director Jun said he wanted to depart from other cooking-oriented films. "Most films dealing with this subject focus on the beauty of cooking and food, but we wanted to highlight the close relations between cooks and food materials," he said.

One of the most emotionally-charged scenes in the film involves the slaughtering of a cow, when Seong-chan becomes extremely anguished and distressed over the inhumane aspect of cooking. While most people do not think about where their meat has come from, behind any meat, however prettily decorated, is a slaughtering. Cooks must accept that cows and other live animals are part of the cooking process, whether they want it or not.

Kim Kang-woo, who plays Seong-chan, said he knew nothing about the slaughtering process. To prepare for the crucial shooting, he visited a slaughterhouse, where he suffered a big shock.

"When we were actually shooting the slaughterhouse scene, Seong-sun (the name of the cow under the care of Seong-chan in the film) was under extreme pressure and it turned out that it lost about 30 kilograms in a day because it got terrified at the possibility that it might be slaughtered right there," Kim said.

But except for the teary scene, the film revolves around a wide range of delicacies expertly prepared by professional cooks intent on staying ahead in the competition, while the actors help amplify the dramatic elements in the otherwise too-flat plot.

For all the bigger and grander visual effects, the big-screen adaptation seems unlikely to surpass the original comic series, especially in the small yet moving details that make up a human drama.

But then again, Huh Young-man, creator of the original cartoon series, seems to have feasted on the silver-screen adaptation. Director Jun said, "After Huh watched our movie, he just put his thumbs up, and I was really happy to see that." "Le Grand Chef," or "Sikgaek" in Korean, is scheduled to be released on Nov. 1.

`Chef Overfeeds Gourmet Drama

Inspired by the phenomenally popular comic series of the same name, ``Le Grand Chef'' (Sikgaek) offers an ``Iron Chef''-style edge that dashes through an explosively colorful array of Korean dishes. Revolving around a fierce cooking competition, ``Chef '' is stimulating throughout, but is ultimately more ``gluttonous'' than tasteful.

A Japanese man has stepped forward to redeem past evils involving the chef to Korea's last emperor Seonjong, and a nationwide culinary battle ensues. Archenemies Seong-chan (Kim Kang-woo) and Bong-ju (Lim Won-hee) rekindle their longstanding rivalry as they sharpen their knives. Five years before, the two had competed to take over Unamjeong, a renowned Korean restaurant. But Seong-chan suffers a critical blow when his blowfish dish poisons the jurors. Distraught, he retires to the countryside, while Bong-ju exploits the wealth and fame of his inheritance.

With the help of Jin-su (Lee Ha-na), a pretty, energetic reporter, Seong-chan makes a comeback. But now, he must not only battle the blindly ambitious Bong-ju, but also face the corrupt jurors and take care of his Alzheimer-struck grandfather, and also take a few moments to contemplate the budding romance with Jin-su. The film stuffs in so much drama, including a tangled history involving the two main characters' grandfathers, with the dizzying gastronomic visuals, that it becomes slightly overwhelming.

``Most films dealing with this subject focus on the aesthetics of cooking and food, but we wanted to focus on the intimate connection between cooks and food ingredients,'' director Jun Yoon-soo told reporters after a recent press preview.

``Chef'' makes that point shockingly clear, as its first scene unfolds with a huge butcher knife beheading a blowfish. Like the hit TV series ``Jewel in the Palace,'' the screen is indeed filled with sumptuous dishes like the blowfish sushi (more than a million won per plate), beef carpaccio and gujeolpan, a royal court dish. It is also sprinkled with everyday favorites like doenjangjjigae (bean curd soup) and ramyeon.

The fiery food competition scenes are pieced together with mosaic-like sequences, evoking its comic book origin, but is surprisingly unappetizing. The most disturbing part involves the slaughtering of a pet cow, which must be sacrificed for the honor of his owner Seong-chan. This emotionally riveting scene shows how a chef must overcome personal feelings toward cows and other such animals that land on the table.

``When we were actually shooting the slaughterhouse scene, Seong-sun (the name of the cow) was extremely stressed and had actually lost about 30 kilograms that day because it was terrified it might be slaughtered right there,'' actor Kim Kang-woo said.

Besides the tear-jerking moments, the movie is spiked with slapdash comedy. It offers rather primitive black and white plot elements amid the rainbow-hued food scenes. Bong-gu, for example is completely contemptible much like his greasy hairstyle, as he bribes jurors among other wrongdoings.

But the film is indeed spiced with some good old humor. Two ``Dumb and Dumber'' buddies, an abused househusband and ramyeon-obsessed prankster, shadow the main characters. Slices of picturesque scenes -- rolling sunflower fields and other watercolor painting-like landscapes -- allow the audience respite from the otherwise stuffy gastronomic experience.

Rather than ``bon appetit,'' be ready for a cinematic feast that may not suit all palates.

Le Grand Chef Whets Appetites at AFM



Released locally November 1st, Show Easts cooking drama Le Grand Chef is drawing strong interest from buyers at the 2007 American Film Market, currently running Oct 31 Nov 7 in LA. The film has been sold to Festive Films for Singapore and Taiwan, to Sundream for Hong Kong, to A.O.E. for Malaysia and to M Pictures for Thailand. Talks to take the film to China are also being negotiated.



Directed by JEON Yun-su, known previously for melodramas such as My Girl And I (2005) and Besa Me Mucho (2001), Le Grand Chef moves out of the bedroom and into the kitchen. The film is anticipated locally for its parallels with pan-Asian hit Korean TV drama Jewel In the Palace, which had a palace cook as its chief character.



The film is based on a best-selling graphic novel by HEO Yeong-man, which also raises expectations for locals after the successful adaptation of another of HEOs novels resulted in the 2006 hit Tazza: The High Rollers. The new film tells the story of a pair of young chefs who enter a tense cooking rivalry to win a long-lost knife used centuries before by the Grand Royal Chef a title given to the top male chef in the country who cooked for royal banquets. During the Japanese occupation, the last Grand Royal Chef used the knife to cut off his arms in refusal to cook for the Japanese.



Show East is billing the film as Koreas first feature to deal intimately with culinary creation. PARK Chul-soos 301, 302 touched on the subject of cooking, but Le Grand Chef is the first to focus entirely on the world of gourmet cuisine. The film stars KIM Gang-woo and LIM Won-hee as the competing chefs, and TV actress LEE Han-na as a network producer assigned to capture the competition.

《食客》制作方拒绝向日本出售版权

《食客》在上月举行的釜山电影节亚洲电影市场上受到了海外买家们的追捧。日本也有3~4家发行公司有意购买版权,但被制作方一口回绝了。因为日本方面的买家对影片后半部背景中的韩日两国矛盾表示很难接受,要求重新剪辑。

对这一要求,该片导演金润洙斩钉截铁地回答说:为了利益损害作品就已经不像话了,如果是出于历史原因的话更行不通了。即使是改动一秒钟也不行。

很巧的是,《食客》与日本顶级演员木村拓哉主演的《律政英雄》同一天上映。但日本票房第一的《律政英雄》也完败于《食客》。

这样与日本展开微妙心理战的《食客》今后的票房趋势令人瞩目。

Nevertheless, the two recently released movies "Le Grand Chef" and "Hero" explore the world of two professions -- cooking and law -- in an interesting manner and are sure to be great *box-office successes.

"Le Grand Chef"

The Junior Herald recommends those who plan to watch "Le Grand Chef" to eat before watching the movie or you may find your mouth watering the whole time.

"Le Grand Chef," an adaptation of Huh Young-man`s celebrated comic series of the same name, presents all kinds of delicious food.

Unlike the original comic series, which focused on episodes surrounding food, the movie is more about the confrontation between the two *protagonists -- Seong-chan and Bong-ju, played by Kim Kang-woo and Lim Won-hee, respectively.

In the movie, a national cooking contest has been held to find the best chef. The prize is a knife that belonged to the last chef of the Joseon Kingdom. The contest is a heated cooking battle in which every *contestant competes fiercely with one another. In addition to everyday foods like bean paste soup and egg rolls, *cuisine from the royal Korean court is also presented.

"Le Grand Chef" presents a very basic conflict of good versus evil. Strangely enough, however, all the characters are lovable. Lim, for instance, plays the role of the *villain Bong-ju in the movie, but his unique style of comic acting will not turn fans away. It is also worthwhile to see the performance by Lee Ha-na, who makes her screen debut in the movie.

"Hero"

"Hero" is a *big-screen adaptation of the Japanese television drama of the same name. Starring Takuya Kimura, one of the most popular actors in Japan, the Japanese movie has been gaining attention for months. This is because many Koreans are already familiar with and are big fans of the Japanese drama broadcast on cable TV.

The movie "Hero" is set in the public prosecutor`s office in Tokyo, where responsible and *public-spirited prosecutors fight against injustice. Among them, young prosecutor Kuryu Kohei, played by Kimura, is the most outstanding. His usual clothing of a brown jumper and ripped jeans doesn`t seem to suit his social position at all. But his ability to conduct an investigation is brilliant. In the movie, Kohei shows exceptional abilities when solving a murder case.

A bonus attraction for Korean fans is the cameo appearance of Lee Byung-hun and scenes filmed in Busan.

《食客》连续两周居票房排行首位




韩联社首尔11月12日电 由漫画改编的电影《食客》连续两周稳居票房排行首位。

电影振兴委员会12日公布的影院入场券联合通信网(影院加入率95%)统计显示,9日至11日,影片《食客》在全国412家影院共吸引了50.7151万名观众(占有率达38.6%)。

与上映首周相比,该影片上映影院数和观众人数几乎没有减少,上映两周后观影人数远远超过百万,达到129.33万人次。

由台湾导演李安执导的话题影片《色,戒》已上映8天,第一个周末在298家影院吸引了22.6722万观众(17.3%)。该片在首尔吸引了92752名观众,占有率达21.6%,高于全国观众占有率,其全国累计观影人数达26.9423万。

《食客》观众突破100万两周稳居票房榜首

根据韩国著名漫画家许荣万的同名漫画改编的电影《食客》自公映以来连续两周高居票房排行榜首位。

据韩国电影振兴委员会的影院门票综合计算机网统计,影片《食客》自11月9日至11日共吸引观众50.7151万人次,稳居票房榜首。

影片《食客》在上映后的第10天,累计观众数量便超过100万人次。该片截止11日共吸引了129.330万观众,表现出了超高的人气。

此外,在威尼斯电影节上获得金狮奖的影片《色、戒》虽然以长达20多分钟的火辣激情戏引起不少的话题。然而在同一时间段,这部影片吸引了22.6722万观众,居排行榜第二位。

而上周末因《食客》的登场退居第二的影片《正正当当地活着》,则吸引了18.2769万观众,下降至第三。

朝鲜王朝末代皇孙观看《食客》后流泪

电影《食客》让朝鲜王朝末代皇孙李锡也为之动容流泪。

15日,李锡在首尔三成洞MEGABOX影院观看电影《食客》之后举行的记者会上表达感想说:感到内心非常激动。

在影片《食客》中出现了失去国家后,饮食俱废的朝鲜的最后一个皇帝纯宗流泪吃东西的场面。李锡来到电影院观看此片并流泪也都是因为这个场面。

李锡表示:真希望不仅是饮食、曾经灿烂的朝鲜王朝的历史复活,而且这个国家的自尊也能得以复活。李锡还提及成立了皇室文化财团,正在展开皇室复原运动。

不仅如此,李锡还回顾了曾一度吃宫中食物的幼年时期。他表示:我吃了10多年的宫中食物。上小学时,尚宫给我送来盒饭,我记得真的非常好吃。

当天,李锡与主要演员林元熙、金康宇、李荷娜等一起观看了电影,并在记者会上聊起了电影和我们的饮食。

电影《食客》改编自著名漫画家许英万的同名漫画书,已经2周连续占据票房冠军宝座,得到了观众的好评。

Actor Kim Kang-woo Wins in Turin


Actor Kim Kang-woo wins the Best Actor award at the 25th Torino Film Festival, Saturday, becoming the first Korean to be given the award.

Actor Kim Kang-woo won the Best Actor award for his role in ``The Railroad'' (Gyeonguiseon) at the 25th Torino Film Festival in Italy, Saturday.

``The Railroad,'' directed by Park Heung-sik, also won a special award given by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI).

Kim's agency Namoo Actors quoted the 29-year old actor as saying: ``I'm very glad to have received this big award, but what I cannot forget is the response from the audience.'' He was referring to the screening of ``The Railroad, which was attended by 500 people at the film festival last week.

``As I saw the audience squeeze into the seats, laughing and crying along with the movie, I realized that movie allows people to communicate regardless of borders,'' Kim said.

``The Railroad'' is about two lost souls (played by Kim and actress Sohn Tae-young), who find themselves stranded at the last railroad stop before the Demilitarized Zone on a snowy night. As they spend the night together, they learn to reveal their inner pain to each other.

The 45-year old Park, who also wrote the screenplay for ``The Railroad,'' received favorable reviews for his debut film ``The Twins'' in 2004. ``The Railroad,'' his second film, premiered at the 11th Pusan International Film Festival last October.

Kim recently starred in the hit film ``Le Grand Chef,'' and previously appeared in such films as ``The War of Flowers'' and ``Silmido.''

The Torino Film Festival, which ran from Nov. 23 to Dec. 1, is a low-key event compared to the Venice International Film Festival. It focuses on independent and art-house movies.
The festival's main section, International Feature Film competition, is dedicated to discovering new cinematic talent. This year, 15 films from France, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Latvia, South Korea, Philippines, Malaysia, United States, Canada and Australia were screened.

Chinese-American actress Joan Chen won Best Actress for her role in the Australian film ``The Home Song Stories.'' Best Film award was given to ``Garage'' by Lenny Abrahamson from Ireland.

金康宇双喜临门创票房新高又获大奖

最近,韩国著名演员金康宇可谓双喜临门,心花怒放。

金康宇担纲主演的电影《食客》上映27天既吸引了250万观众,随后他又在1日闭幕的第25届都灵电影节上凭借《京义线》获得了最佳男主角奖。

金康宇发表获奖感想说:获得大奖固然非常高兴,可影片上映时观众带给我的感动更让我难以忘怀。我领悟到了电影没有国境、电影能够传达和沟通人与人的情感。我想,那一瞬间的感动一生都不会忘怀。

据悉,11月26日为出席都灵电影节赶赴意大利的金康宇将于12月3日回国。

另外,带给金康宇最佳男主角奖的《京义线》又在多伦多国际电影节上从美国、加拿大、法国等15部来自世界各国的竞争单元参选作品中脱颖而出,获得了影评人协会奖。

Actor Kim Kang-woo, 29, must feel like flying by now.

Although Le Grand Chef, in which he played the leading role, opened in theaters during the slowest season (November), it has attracted more than 2.6 million movie goers nationwide. Moreover, he won the Best Actors award on Saturday (local time) at the 25th Torino Film Festival for his role in The Railroad, which was directed by filmmaker Park Heung-sik and opened in Korea in May. Simply put, he earned recognition as an actor who can garner both critical acclaim and box office success.


Although many Korean actresses won the Torino Film Festival, only a handful of Korean actors won this prestigious international award. Surprisingly, his voice was calm when he was asked on Sunday about winning the award.


I couldnt imagine this could happen when I came here. I was nervous when the announcement was made, but I felt rather composed when I walked up to the platform. When I gave a few words in both English and Italian, the response was really great. It perked me up, Kim said.


Kim, however, said that there was a moment that seemed more thrilling than when he received the award: the moment when he realized that Italian audiences responded exactly the same way to some of the scenes in The Railroad as the Korean audience did, either laughing or shedding tears. At the beginning, he suspected whether foreigners could also understand the movie, but his suspicion changed into the conviction that the Korean sentiments and their sincerity worked! Although The Railroad received rave reviews in Korea, it did badly at the box office.


It opened in about 10 theaters. Although I was upset because the public did not even get a chance to have access to the movie, I diligently appeared on the stages of theaters all alone as I believed that I had to do my best, Kim added.


Whats more, he was hurt when he heard rumors about Le Grand Chef, such as The film could not attract investment because there is no star actor, and The filming has been postponed because there is no money to pay for food.


When asked whether he felt pleased to get revenge on those critics with its box-office success, he just kept smiling. However, he pointed out that the secret behind its success was the hungry spirit which helped the director and actors bond even stronger, despite all odds.


On December 27, The Mask, a psychological thriller directed by Yang Yoon-ho, the director of Holiday, and Kim starred,, will also hit theaters. Kim plays a detective who finds out an unexpected secret during his investigation into a mysterious serial murder case. In order to play a more convincing role, he stayed closely with the detectives of the Jung-bu Police Station in Seoul. He almost lived with them at the police station for a while.


It is easy to imitate a detective. You can see a lot of them in movies. However, I wanted to know their inner side. I drank soju with them and listened extensively to their difficulties. I also read a lot of materials about crime cases.


His low tone is almost monotonous when he speaks. He also has the image of a serious man like that of Seong-chan, the main character of Le Grand Chef. However, director Yang told the audience at a recent press conference, I thought Kim was a gentle man, but he is good at dirty jokes. He is truly a third-rated person. Director Lees comment made the audience burst into laughter. Although Kim has not even turned 30, he has a lot more to show.

现在演员金强宇(29)应该高兴得想飞起来吧。

他主演的电影《食客》不仅在最坏的淡季(11月)上映后迎来了超过260万的观众,1日下午(当地时间)还在意大利Torino国际电影节上,以5月首映的朴兴植导演的《The Railroad》获得了最佳男主角奖。这样他在票房和演技上一次性获得了双丰收。


特别是在国际电影节上获得最佳主角奖的韩国女演员不少,但男演员只有屈指可数的李德华、夏正宇等几名。2日在Torino准备回国的他,声音却出乎意料的平淡。


根本就没想到会这样。听到消息时觉得很震惊,但在获奖台上觉得很舒心。用英语和意大利语简单的打招呼时他们都很高兴,因此我也得到了鼓励。


他说比获奖更让他高兴的是观看《The Railroad》的意大利观众就像韩国观众那样,随着剧情欢笑、悲伤。因此外国人能理解吗的疑虑,变成了我们的情绪和真心相通的确信。《The Railroad》在韩国也受到了好评,但票房上却遭到了惨败。


上映的电影院只有10个左右。虽然因与大众接触的机会也没有,而觉得很伤心,但以尽全力的想法还是一个人努力参加了宣传活动。


特别是拍《食客》时,没有明星所以获得到投资、(虽然是饮食电影)但因没有饭钱拍不了电影等的传闻让他深受打击。


面对是不是因为这样更觉得在食客成功后有成就感的提问,他只以笑容来回应。对成功的秘诀他这样回答到:因为困难多,所以导演和演员更能团结的饥饿精神,让这部电影取得了更好的成绩。


27日,还将首映杨允浩导演他主演的心理悬疑片《假面》。他将饰演一位调查神秘连锁杀人事件而获悉以外秘密的刑警。因此他还曾一段时间到首尔中部警署上过班,和这些真实的警察们学了不少真本事。


想演一位警察并不难,因为电影中我们经常看得到警察。但为了更好的了解他们的真实想法,因此经常和他们喝酒倾听他们的想法。还读过很多案件资料。


几乎没有语调的低沉的声音。虽然他有着《食客》主人公成赞那样慎重的印象,但前些日子在制作报告会中,杨允浩导演以以前觉得金强宇很严肃,但其实他很会开低俗玩笑等颇有风流气质博得了大家的笑声。还没到30岁的他,将展现给我们的还有很多。

韩联社首尔12月13日电 根据许英万的同名漫画改编的电影《食客》(导演全允洙)的观众人数突破300万人次。

影片供应商Yedang娱乐公司13日表示,上月1日上映的《食客》截至本月12日,其累计观众人数超过了300万人次。

在今年上映的韩国电影中,观众人数超过300万的电影分别是《那家伙的声音》、《D-WAR》和《华丽的休假》。

Yedang娱乐公司方面表示:该电影的观众人数提前超过收支平衡点的150万观众,相比于《D-WAR》和《华丽的休假》等大制作电影,收益率将更高一些。(完)

《食客》有望成为今年影院票房冠军

电影《食客》的上座率已突破300万,跻身于今年下半年最热销作品的行列。

根据投资公司Yedang娱乐方面的资料,到12日为止,《食客》全国观众已突破300万名。在今年韩国电影占有率比前一年大幅下滑,且又是在萧条期11月首映的情况下,《食客》依然发挥力量,观众总数显著上升。

另外,据预测,《食客》将创出高于《D-War》和《华丽的休假》的800万观众的收益率。以观众达150万这一收支平衡点为准,目前该片已经创下了两倍以上的销售额,如果再加上海外版权和电视台播放权、DVD发行等附加版权收入,预计将成为今年实现最高收益率的韩国电影。

另外,据预测,在与享受圣诞特需的家庭电影的竞争中也不断取得不俗成绩的《食客》观众人数有望突破350万名。

Le Grand Chef






"Le Grand Chef," based on an extremely popular comic series of the same title, sold 3 million tickets as of December 12. Korean movies attracting more than 3 million viewers this year, include "His Voice," "D-War," and "Remember U 518". "Le Grand Chef," directed by Jeon Yoon-soo, was released in the relatively slack season of November, but is showing a good performance. The gourmet movie is now in the spotlight as an unusual box office hit this year.



Le Grand Chef



Sikgaek, the Korean title of the film, means a dependent, hanger-on, or person who lives off someone else. It has traditionally been used to describe those who live off a rich family without working for it. There is a similar word, Mungaek in Korean, which refers to people who pay a visit to a particular person everyday for purposes of taking some interests from him or her. Neither of these terms have positive meaning. The relationship can, however, be mutually beneficial. Rich families often needed the sikgaek to demonstrate their power, or the family would use the sikgaek to take care of some difficult or dirty job. They were similar to retainers or vassals, who were a kind of "necessary evil". The sikgaek group included so many different kinds of people that it can hardly be defined with only a few words.




Huh Young-man and Sikgaek (Le Grand Chef)



Huh Young-man, one of the most celebrated comic strip artists in Korea, was born in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province in 1947. He made a debut in the nations comic art circles with his successful entry in the Hankook Ilbo dailys comic strip contest. Comic artist Huhs other series, War of Flowers (Tazza in Korean), was adapted into a tantalizing gambling box-office hit last year, selling more than 7 million tickets. Huh serialized Le Grand Chef in a major daily in September 2002. The dramatic portrayal of a young, aspiring Korean cook, coupled with delicate sketches of various foods, appealed strongly to readers. The series was published into several books and more than 540,000 copies have been sold so far. Moviemakers never miss such an interesting opportunity, so "e Grand Chef" was produced as a feature film. The success of the two series as movies made Huh a "certified check" for box-office success. It proves Huhs works are outstanding in story, subject and structure.




Le Grand Chef as Movie



It is almost impossible to feature all the episodes of the series in a movie. Instead, the film primarily focuses on cooking and two characters competing in a contest. It revolves around the conflict between Seong-chan and Bong-ju, longtime rivals intent on staying ahead in the competition.

Synopsis of Le Grand Chef

-Seong-chan and Bong-ju were working together at Unamjeong, a famous Korean restaurant. To succeed the restaurant's owner, the two fight each other in an in-house contest. For some reason, those who taste Seong-chan's swellfish are poisoned, and Bong-ju grabs the much-coveted "best cook" spot at the restaurant. Five years later, the two meet at a national cooking contest to select an authentic master and successor to the Joseon Dynastys royal cuisines. As the contest goes on, the past secrets behind the Unamjeong restaurant become unveiled one by one.




Director Jeon Yoon-soo



Jeon, born in Seoul in 1971, graduated from the movie school of Chungang University. He is considered a promising director who can express subtle changes of sentiments. He wrote scenarios for movies and served as assistant director for some great box-office hits, including "The Gingko Bend," "Swiri," etc. In 2001 he debuted as a film director with "Bessa Me Mucho." He directed "My Girl and I" in 2005. With his latest work, Le Grand Chef, Jeon has clearly made a name for himself in the local film scene.

'Sikgaek' offers visual taste of Korean cuisine

Food has rarely played a leading role in a miniseries. But in "Sikgaek", the SBS drama slated to air on May 26, food takes center stage. And not just any kind of food. Korean cuisine gets the spotlight this time around.

Based on Heo Yeong-man's bestselling comic book series of the same name, this 24-episode drama follows Korean chef Seong-chan, played by Kim Rae-won, on his travels throughout Korea. Driving a beat-up truck, Seong-chan searches for the essence of Korean food, looking for it in the remotest parts of this country.

With cuisine playing such a big role, the production team needed a food expert. And they knew exactly who to turn to.

Kim Soo-jin, president of her own food consulting group, Food and Culture Korea, handled food direction for the film version of Heo Yeong-man's "Sikgaek", which hit screens nationwide as "Le Grand Chef", and topped national charts last year.

The mouthwatering dishes cooked up on the big screen served as testimony to her ability to turn Korean cuisine into a showstopper. Kim became a natural shoo-in for the position of food director for the drama.

She seized the opportunity. Little did she know what she was getting herself into.

"A drama is much more difficult than a movie", said Kim, 52, in an interview with The Korea Herald. "This drama shows more than the movie did. There is more research, more sketches, and more designs, and we also have to decide how to plate the food".

The film version provided her with a storyboard, making it easier for her to plan out each food scene. But, with this drama, she has to do everything from scratch.

"We look at the script in advance, and we need to figure out how the food will appear". But that's just the beginning of the process.

Kim plays composer and conductor to her team of 25. She reads the script in advance, finding the scenes which involve food. After noting all food scenes, she carefully plans out each scene before prepping the ingredients with her team the night before filming.

"For example, what we are filming that day involves making food for 32 people", said Kim. "The day before, we have to prepare all of the ingredients. We need to make notes on what each actor will be cooking, from what step to what step ... And then, the day we film, we post up these notes here and there".

The day of filming starts at dawn for Kim and her team. In the wee hours of the morning, they hit the markets, picking the ingredients that need to be extra-fresh when they arrive on set.

After getting all the needed ingredients together, she oversees the cooking and plating while directing the actors, and monitoring the screen with the director on set.

"You have to teach on set", said Kim. "We take the food and say, 'Kim Rae-won, you will be cooking this today, so follow through with these actions in this order and like this'. That way, the actors won't make any mistakes, and we can all work together quickly.

"And, in order to get the food to look fresh and tasty, we must make the same dish over and over again", she added.

When the scene involves eating the food, they need to make about eight sets of the same dish for each actor.

"It's war", she mused.

That much work requires three teams. Kim calls them teams A, B and C. Team A stays on set. Team B handles all the cooking. And Team C handles all the supplies.

Just how do all these people communicate with each other? They do it the old-fashioned way. "We use walkie-talkies", Kim said.

Hard to imagine this well-groomed, petite woman barking out orders on such a contraption, but apparently it's all in a day's work.

But, long before all the walkie-talkies, prepping and filming came into play, Kim was hard at work training the actors in their roles as chefs. It was no easy matter getting two highly inexperienced actors to wield a knife with expertise.

"Kim Rae-won was already quite good at basic cooking", but she couldn't say the same for Kwon Oh-jung and Won Ki-joon, who play rival chefs in "Sikgaek".

"But, in the case of Kwon O-joong and Won Ki-joon, they didn't know how to use a knife at all", explained Kim. "So, we started with learning how to julienne five daikon radishes a day. It takes about three hours to mince five large daikon radishes at first. But Kwon and Won worked really hard. They would come for three to four hours at a time, and just julienne radishes".

After learning how to mince them, all three actors learned how to cut the radishes into half moons, thin slices and perfect cubes.

"Later on, when you see them on screen chopping at radishes you will be surprised", said Kim with pride. "The radish just flies".

And radishes aren't the only thing they know how to cook. Each actor has his own special dish.

According to the food director, Kim Rae-won makes a great cheonggukjang -- a fermented miso bean stew. Won Ki-joon whips up a beautiful pomegranate-shaped dumpling soup, while Kwon Oh-jung cooks a solid shinsollo -- a complicated Joseon-era dish.

In fact, they have gotten so good at cooking over those six weeks of intensive training that, according to Kim, "the director says that we should hold a cooking competition for them later on".

To get a visual taste of their dishes and those of food director Kim and her team, just wait til May 26 when the first episode airs on SBS.
